90/90 Hamstring

🎯 Hamstrings🏋️ Body onlyBeginnerCalves (2°)

How to do the 90/90 hamstring

  1. Lie on your back, with one leg extended straight out.
  2. With the other leg, bend the hip and knee to 90 degrees. You may brace your leg with your hands if necessary. This will be your starting position.
  3. Extend your leg straight into the air, pausing briefly at the top. Return the leg to the starting position.
  4. Repeat for 10-20 repetitions, and then switch to the other leg.

Muscles worked

The muscles under tension are the hamstrings, which extend the hip and bend the knee, frequently at both joints in the same repetition.

A stretch loads them at the far end of the range they normally work in, so the position you hold is itself the resistance.

Other muscle groups are involved too: the calves control the ankle and hold the heel position.

How this movement works

Force goes away from the body: the muscles press against the floor, a wall or your own opposite limb rather than drawing anything in. There is no weight to add, so the position you can reach and keep is the whole variable.

It is filed under stretching, so the target is range of motion rather than force — a position you can settle into and breathe in, held long enough for the tissue to give.

What you need

No equipment at all. The resistance is your own bodyweight, so you progress by changing leverage, range or tempo rather than by adding plates — and you can do it anywhere.

Difficulty

Listed at beginner level: the pattern is simple enough to pick up without coaching, and a position that goes wrong mid-set is obvious enough to correct on the next repetition.
