Frequently asked questions
What is the Devine formula?
Men: IBW (kg) = 50 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60). Women: IBW (kg) = 45.5 + 2.3 × (height in inches − 60). Most commonly used for drug dosing.
Why are there multiple IBW formulas?
Different formulas were derived for different populations and clinical use cases. Devine is the most widely used in pharmacy, Robinson and Miller produce slightly different estimates, and Hamwi is the oldest of the four.
Is IBW the same as healthy weight?
No. IBW is a mathematical estimate used primarily for drug dosing. BMI is more commonly used to assess healthy weight ranges.
What is the minimum height for these formulas?
Defined for height > 60 inches (152.4 cm). Below that, results are not meaningful.
