Frequently asked questions

What is the GINA asthma control assessment?

The Global Initiative for Asthma symptom-control tool: four yes/no questions about the past 4 weeks classify control as well-, partly-, or uncontrolled.

How is GINA control classified?

None of the four = well-controlled; 1–2 = partly controlled; 3–4 = uncontrolled.

Is symptom control the same as risk?

No — GINA separately assesses future risk (exacerbations, fixed airflow limitation, medication side-effects), which should also be evaluated.

How does control guide therapy?

Poor control prompts checking adherence/technique and stepping up treatment; sustained good control may allow step-down.
