Frequently asked questions
What is the CAGE questionnaire?
A 4-item screening tool for alcohol use disorder. The name is a mnemonic: Cut down, Annoyed, Guilty, Eye-opener.
What CAGE score is positive?
A score of ≥ 2 is considered clinically significant and warrants further assessment; some settings use ≥ 1 for higher sensitivity.
What are CAGE limitations?
It is less sensitive for binge drinking and early problem drinking, and does not quantify consumption. AUDIT-C is preferred for at-risk drinking screening.
Does a negative CAGE rule out a problem?
No — recent heavy or hazardous drinking can be missed. Combine with a consumption history.
