How to use
- Enter serum iron (µg/dL) and TIBC (µg/dL).
- TSAT updates instantly with iron-status interpretation.
- Same units must be used for both values.
Frequently asked questions
How is TSAT calculated?
TSAT (%) = (serum iron / TIBC) × 100.
What is normal TSAT?
Normal range is approximately 20–45%. TSAT < 20% suggests iron deficiency; TSAT > 45% suggests iron overload (e.g., hemochromatosis).
Why measure TSAT?
TSAT is part of the standard iron-studies panel and is more specific than ferritin alone, which is also an acute-phase reactant.
When is TSAT misleading?
TSAT is less reliable in acute illness or inflammation, where serum iron may be transiently decreased.
