Frequently asked questions
What is the SIC score?
The ISTH Sepsis-Induced Coagulopathy score uses PT-INR, platelet count, and a capped SOFA subscore to identify early sepsis-associated coagulopathy preceding overt DIC.
What SIC score makes the diagnosis?
A total score ≥ 4 (with the platelet and PT items contributing) defines SIC under the ISTH 2017 criteria.
How is the SOFA component scored?
Sum the respiratory, cardiovascular, hepatic, and renal SOFA subscores; the SIC item is 0 if that sum is 0, 1 if 1, and 2 if ≥ 2 (capped at 2 points).
SIC vs overt DIC?
SIC detects coagulopathy earlier than the ISTH overt-DIC score; many SIC-positive patients progress to DIC if untreated.
