Frequently asked questions

What is the SAS scale?

The Riker Sedation-Agitation Scale (SAS) is a 7-point scale validated for assessing agitation and sedation in adult ICU patients.

SAS target?

3–4 (sedated to calm and cooperative) is the typical goal. SAS 1–2 indicates over-sedation; SAS 5–7 indicates under-sedation/agitation.

SAS vs RASS?

Both are validated and recommended by SCCM PADIS guidelines. RASS is more widely used; SAS is preferred in some institutions.

How often should SAS be assessed?

At least every 4 hours and after each sedative dose change.
