Frequently asked questions
What is the Aldrete score?
The Aldrete (or modified Aldrete) score evaluates post-anesthesia recovery across 5 domains, each 0–2, totaling 0–10. A score ≥ 9 typically meets PACU discharge criteria.
What is the modified Aldrete score?
The modified version replaces "color" with "oxygen saturation" measured by pulse oximetry — used in nearly all modern PACUs.
When is the patient ready to leave PACU?
Most institutions require Aldrete ≥ 9 plus a stable score for 15–30 minutes, in addition to other discharge criteria (pain controlled, no active bleeding, etc.).
Does Aldrete apply to ambulatory surgery?
Yes, but additional criteria (PADSS — Post-Anesthesia Discharge Scoring System) are typically used for discharge to home.
