Frequently asked questions
What is the Rodwell score?
A 7-item hematologic scoring system to screen for neonatal sepsis using CBC parameters. Score ≥ 3 has good sensitivity for sepsis.
How does it compare to blood culture?
Blood culture remains the gold standard. Rodwell helps to risk-stratify when culture results are pending, especially in well-appearing infants.
Should it replace empiric antibiotics in suspected sepsis?
No — empiric antibiotics should still be started in any neonate with strong clinical suspicion or unstable vital signs, regardless of Rodwell score.
When are I:T and I:M ratios reliable?
After 4 hours of life, when leukocyte counts have stabilized post-birth.
