Frequently asked questions
When is the APGAR score performed?
At 1 and 5 minutes after birth. If the 5-minute score is < 7, additional scores are obtained every 5 minutes up to 20 minutes.
What does each letter stand for?
A — Appearance (color); P — Pulse (heart rate); G — Grimace (reflex irritability); A — Activity (muscle tone); R — Respiration.
How is the score interpreted?
7–10: reassuring; 4–6: moderately depressed (may need stimulation, supplemental O₂); 0–3: severely depressed (immediate resuscitation).
Is APGAR predictive of long-term outcomes?
A low 1-minute score does not predict long-term outcomes; a 5-minute score < 7 in the presence of acidosis correlates with greater neurologic risk.
