Frequently asked questions
Macrodrop vs microdrop?
Standard macrodrop sets deliver 20 drops/mL. Microdrop (pediatric) sets deliver 60 drops/mL.
Formula?
mL/h = (drops/min × 60) / drops_per_mL. Drops/min = (mL/h × drops_per_mL) / 60.
Why use drops/min?
When an IV is regulated manually without a pump (gravity infusion), counting drops/min is the only way to control rate.
Pediatric tip?
Always use microdrop (60 gtt/mL) sets for children to avoid accidental rapid infusion.
