What is PREVENT Risk Calculator (AHA 10- & 30-Year CVD Risk)?
The AHA PREVENT calculator implements the American Heart Association's 2023 PREVENT equations (base model), the risk model recommended by recent guidance for primary prevention. Derived from more than 6 million contemporary US adults, PREVENT estimates 10-year and 30-year risk of total cardiovascular disease, atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (heart attack and stroke), and heart failure. It is sex-specific and race-free, and uses age (30–79), total and HDL cholesterol, systolic blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, BMI, eGFR, and antihypertensive and statin use. Heart failure prediction and cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic inputs are new relative to the 2013 Pooled Cohort Equations. This is a decision-support tool — interpret results with a clinician alongside family history, Lp(a), coronary calcium, and other risk enhancers.
How to use
- Select sex and enter age (30–79), total cholesterol, HDL, and systolic BP.
- Enter BMI and eGFR, then mark diabetes, smoking, BP medication, and statin use.
- All six risk estimates and the risk category update instantly; ages 60+ show 10-year risk only.
Frequently asked questions
What is the AHA PREVENT calculator?
PREVENT (Predicting Risk of cardiovascular disease EVENTs) is the American Heart Association's 2023 risk model. It estimates 10- and 30-year risk of total cardiovascular disease, atherosclerotic CVD, and — new versus older calculators — heart failure.
How is PREVENT different from the ASCVD calculator?
PREVENT adds kidney function (eGFR), BMI and statin use, removes race from the model, starts at age 30 instead of 40, and predicts heart failure and 30-year risk. It was derived from over 6 million contemporary US patients.
Why do I not see 30-year results?
The 30-year equations are only defined for ages 30–59. For ages 60–79 the calculator reports 10-year risk only, matching the official AHA tool.
Is this the base or full PREVENT model?
This is the base model, the default of the official AHA calculator. The full model optionally adds HbA1c, urine albumin-creatinine ratio, and a US zip-code deprivation index, which require extra labs and US-specific data.
