How to convert liters to gallons, cups, and ounces
Type any volume — read it in liters, gallons, cups, fluid ounces, or cubic feet instantly.
Recipes, fuel, aquariums, and shipping specs all use different volume units. The Volume Converter handles metric, US customary, and imperial units with exact NIST SP 811 factors.
How it works
- Pick units — "US gallon (gal)" to "Liter (L)", or any other pair.
- Type a value — the result updates as you type, with swap and copy.
- Copy — one click, with "Copied!" feedback.
Volume conversion factors
Every unit converts through the liter (the base unit). To convert A → B, multiply by A's factor and divide by B's:
| Unit | = this many liters |
|---|---|
| Cubic meter (m³) | 1,000 |
| Liter (L) | 1 |
| Milliliter (mL) | 0.001 |
| US gallon (gal) | 3.785411784 |
| US quart (qt) | 0.946352946 |
| US pint (pt) | 0.473176473 |
| US cup (cup) | 0.2365882365 |
| US fluid ounce (fl oz) | 0.029573529563 |
| Tablespoon (tbsp) | 0.014786764781 |
| Teaspoon (tsp) | 0.004928921594 |
| Imperial gallon (imp gal) | 4.54609 |
| Cubic foot (ft³) | 28.316846592 |
| Cubic inch (in³) | 0.016387064 |
When you need it
The classic traps: US and imperial gallons differ by 20%, and a US "cup" is 236.59 mL while many recipe sites round to 240 mL. When precision matters (dosing, chemistry, brewing), use the exact factors in the table above.
